Gareth Rees blazed a trail in the professional rugby world
Gareth was the first North American inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame, and the first rugby athlete inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
Gareth Rees took to the game of rugby as a youngster and soon began to dominate the sport with his speed, ball handling, and the precision kicking that he would become famous for. He was born a first-generation Canadian in Duncan, BC to a Welsh father and an English mother, both physical education teachers. They instilled in Gareth the value of sport, regardless of if he was successful or not.
As a result, Gareth grew up playing all types of sport, year-round. His father had played rugby at a high level, and when it was time to choose a sport to pursue in his later years, Gareth chose to follow in his footsteps.
Blazing a trail through the professional rugby world, Gareth set the bar for Canadian men in the sport. At 19 years of age, he was the youngest person ever to be named to an All World Rugby XV. He is the only man to have represented his country in the first four Rugby World Cups (1987, 1991, 1995, and 1999), and the first man to captain his country in two Rugby World Cups (1995 and 1999). His scoring tally of 120 is ranked amongst the top in Rugby World Cup history.
Gareth was captain of the Canadian national team 25 times in his 14 years with the team. He won scoring titles in France, Wales, and England where he played professionally for a decade. In 2011 Gareth became the first North American inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame.
Since his retirement, Gareth has been a passionate advocate for his sport, introducing rugby to beginners of all ages across Canada and around the world. He is known as a gentleman on and off the field who believes strongly in the value of sports and sportsmanship. Gareth is a fiercely proud Canadian, a terrific example of the personal qualities that make sport such a vital part of nation-building, and a credit to his country.
Gareth currently serves as a Director of Strategic Relations at Rugby Canada and acknowledges his dad, Alun Rees, as the greatest influence in his career. Gareth Rees was awarded the Order of Sport and inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

Il est également le premier à avoir agi comme capitaine de son équipe à deux Coupes du monde de rugby, en 1995 et 1999, et il a occupé cette fonction pas moins de 25 fois au cours de ses 14 années passées avec l’équipe.
Il a remporté le titre de meilleur marqueur en France, au pays de Galles et en Angleterre où il a joué professionnellement pendant 10 ans et il est encore classé parmi les 10 meilleurs marqueurs en Coupe du monde. En 2011, il est devenu le seul Nord-américain à être intronisé au Temple de la renommée international de rugby.
Depuis sa retraite, Gareth Rees est un promoteur passionné du rugby, initiant les débutants de tous âges à travers le Canada et dans le monde. Il est reconnu pour être un gentleman sur et à l’extérieur du terrain qui croit ardemment aux valeurs du sport et à l’esprit sportif. Il est un fier Canadien, un bel exemple des qualités personnelles qui font que le sport est une composante essentielle de l’édification du pays et une source de fierté pour son pays. Il occupe présentement le poste de gestionnaire des programmes nationaux avec Rugby Canada et affirme que son père, Alun Rees, est celui qui a exercé la plus grande influence sur sa carrière.
